Street Named For Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr.

The city of Mainz, Germany named a street for slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, mere days after his assassination. The tribute was prescient given Martin Luther King, Sr., the icon’s father and Baptist preacher, assumed the name during a 1934 trip to Berlin. Martin Sr. changed his name and that of his son from Michael to Martin Luther to mirror that of the Protestant Reformist Martin Luther.
